International Programs
Building on the staff's longstanding expertise in U.S.-Russian
relations, the institute's visionary International Programs
began with a satellite office in Moscow. Since then, the World
Security Institute has extended its presence to Brussels,
Belgium, and Beijing, China. These operations, along with
programs concentrating on security challenges in areas such
as the Caucasus, European Union, and Cuba, provide vital access
to information and people around the world.
The Brussels office continues to follow
and analyze the security policies of the European Union and
its individual member states, and serves as a source of defense
expertise to media and decision-makers in EU institutions, EU
member states, and the United States. The Brussels office advises
members of the European Parliament, the European Commission
and the Council of the European Union on external security-related
matters.
Mark Burgess, Director
In an effort to address the issue of regional integration and foster mutual
trust among the three South Caucasus republics, the World Security Institute, in collaboration
with the Washington University in St. Louis, established the WSI Caucasus Project. This is a
comprehensive multidisciplinary initiative that aims to defeat the barriers preventing Armenia,
Azerbaijan and Georgia from cooperating and to help build bridges of tolerance and understanding
between the communities of these three states. The WSI Caucasus Project is an effort to establish
citizen-to-citizen contacts among neighboring, and in many instances rival countries, by
harnessing the energies of the progressive young generation.
Lilit Petrosyan, Director
In 2004, WSI successfully launched a
new effort dedicated to promoting research and dialogue between
China and the United States on a range of traditional and non-traditional
security issues that deeply impact this crucial relationship.
The China program presently focuses on a number of core projects:
China - U.S. Dialogue on Space, China’s Energy Security: New
Approaches, Media and Policy: Challenges for China and the U.S.,
and Europe, China and the U.S.: Trialogue on Comprehensive Security.
The China Program now has a full-time staff member in Beijing
along with a number of part time writers and researchers in
China and the United States.
Eric Hagt, Director
As the first international outpost,
the WSI Moscow office is working to expand upon the organization's
long-standing expertise in U.S.-Russian relations through information
exchange, and to provide a source of independent information
and security affairs in Moscow.
