‘A’ is for Arms Trade: Latest defense encyclopedia features entries from CDI and WSI experts
Washington, D.C. – Internationally known for their expertise,
Center for Defense Information Senior Analyst Rachel Stohl and World Security Institute
Brussels Director Mark Burgess were selected as authors in the newly released
Encyclopedia of War and American Society published by Sage Publications.
The comprehensive, three volume encyclopedia concentrates on conflicts of the
last century and examines the complex connections between war and the American
experience. Stohl and Burgess’ entries in the encyclopedia are: “the arms trade,”
“homeland security,” “peacekeeping,” and “the war on terrorism.”
Before heading the WSI Brussels office, Burgess directed the Terrorism Project at the
Washington, D.C. office of the Center for Defense Information. While his main research
area is the study of terrorism, Burgess has also written and spoken extensively on a
variety of security issues and has been published and quoted in a range of U.S. and
international outlets. He holds undergraduate and master's degrees in war studies
and is currently undertaking a Ph.D. in politics.
Stohl is an expert on the international arms trade who has been quoted regularly in
international papers. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including the
Los Angeles Times, the International Herald Tribune, Defense News, and the Christian
Science Monitor. She has also written and helped produce documentaries for CDI on small arms,
landmines, failed states, and child soldiers.
