International Programs -WSI Russian and Asian Programs

The Russian and Asian programs are developing new and innovative political and social approaches toward security, peace and democracy within their respective regions. An important component of this research is the analysis of regional conflicts, both active and “frozen”, and new paths to possible resolutions.

One key aspect of the research is the analysis of what place the unstable Russian and Asian areas occupy in the new global geopolitical setting. The project will examine of the region’s contribution, both military and socio-political, to international security and development. Because many nations in this region serve as important battlegrounds in the global war on terrorism, their roles in the antiterrorist coalition are of critical importance. Furthermore, many countries in the area are experiencing major internal changes, both through domestic reforms and revolutions and in reorientations of foreign policies. These transformations will undoubtedly affect neighboring nations and, subsequently, the entire region.

The project will also research long-term trends in strategy and tactics in U.S.-Russian relations including the search for a new effective model for partnership, and future scenarios for the special bilateral relationship between the two countries.. Because the situation in the former Soviet Union countries has special significance, the project is also developing an effective U.S. policy, coordinated with Russia and other key players that would procure security and democracy throughout the entire former Soviet region.
